AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Review – The last gaming gift for AM4
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Review – The last gaming gift for AM4
We got the exclusive of launching the review of the upcoming processor AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, a CPU that AMD has marketed as “the Ultimate Gaming Processor” comparing with it the Core i9-12900K. Even though the 12900KS was launched as their new flagship processor, the difference between the 12900KS and 12900K is not so much (we do not have a 12900KS in hands).
In the comparison it is listed that their tests were done with DDR4-3600 while the Alder Lake-S DDR5 system, used DDR5-5200. No latencies were specified or Power Limits were given.
We are not tight under no NDA and this is a retail sample.
I have been told that embargo lifts Thursday so I have decided to push up the results. Personally, I would prefer a few more days of testing to triple check results (especially Alder Lake-S DDR4) and add more data, such as DDR5 high speed RAM, frequency and voltage behavior (which will follow the following data).
I will put up updates of review being refreshed through my personal Twitter.
BIG UPDATE: Intel Core i9-12900K/KF DDR5-6000C40 results are in (1080p and 720p).
To follow: Testing more frequencies for 5800X3D (3600C14 kits 4x8GB).
I also invite readers to check other independent review outlets for their results and conclusions. That said, let us begin.

Non-Gaming benchmarks
By no means, these two products (AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Intel Core i9-12900K/KF) are in the same category on “productivity” workload/synthetic benchmarks, due to different price. These results are only reference and part of building our own personal database.
The only take on this is comparing another aspect apart from gaming, since AMD did compare to the 12900K (although it does not take a genius to predict the results.
If you ask why we do not have more CPUs to test, it is because we are a small media outlet and AMD has never sampled us CPUs (only on loan until 2019 I believe) so any CPUs here, come out my own pocket (that includes Intel CPUs, unless specified).
Quick word on Ryzen 7 5800X3D results: Mistype on graph, 2x8GB DDR4-3200C14. Updating with 4x8GB by tomorrow and this message will be deleted (but should not matter too much, except probably GB5.

Quick Word on voltages – AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
As you saw, I rushed a little more than I do than regular reviews so data is being added throughout the day. Someone did ask me about OC and while we found out that a lot of AMD OC menu is locked up (no Curve Optimizer) it made me wonder about voltage behavior in single thread and multi thread situation.
Hence run to Cinebench R23 run (in both scenarios) and the CPU behaves way differently than a Zen 3 non 3D V-CACHE CPU.
According to GIGABYTE ITE sensor and SVI2 TFN, VCore in CBR23 single core test, it is running at 1.20-1.218~ VCore during the test. That is way lower than most Zen 3 chips, which favor high voltage to keep high boost while there's single core loads.
Meanwhile, at CBR23 multi-core test, VCore is actually higher, with 1.248ish volts. Zen 3 with 3D V-CACHE, in this retail sample, behaves differently from regular Zen 3 CPUs.

Gaming benchmarks – 1080p and 720p
Our gaming test suite is normally used for our graphics cards review and the small difference for CPUs, is that we will be testing 720p resolution. Although most people do not play at 720p, testing at a lower resolution between CPUs helps how really fast it is. For the sake of speed and simplicity, settings are set at maximum graphics quality (some of those options do stress for the CPU rather than leave it at only low preset).
Nevertheless, we will try to explore and decipher some of the results we are seeing in some games. We also include results using 1080p to add more data. Our gaming suite includes:
-Assassin's Creed Origins
-Borderlands 3 (DX12)
-Control (DX12)
-Death Stranding
-F1 2020
-FFXV
-Metro Exodus
-Shadow of the Tomb Raider (DX12)
-Shadow of War
-Strange Brigade (DX12 – Async ON)
-The Witcher 3
Please, do consider that it is hard to compare FPS from one web site to another, since some might be using in-built benchmark tools or some custom game scenes.
Have that in mind beforehand.
Gaming Benchmarks – 1080p – AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs 12900K/F (DDR4-3200C14 & DDR5-6000C40)
Summary – Gaming benchmarks -1080p
For the most part, on the test suite we have, 1080p results are on par, except for a few exceptions. Death Stranding, even though it has a 240fps cap, AVG FPS and 1% LOW results are a tad better for the AMD Ryzen-CPU.
Out of the full test suite, three results stand out, even for 1080p. The point here is, which is the “fastest cpu” and as AMD Marketing showed, there is an actual difference in ffxv, Shadow of the Tomb Raider The Witcher 3.
Out of those three, The Witcher 3 (Novigrad) stands out with a huge 22%. Checking some past results I did Alder Lake-S using DDR5 (did not put them since I want to retest ADL-S DDR5 6200 C40) it seems there is some bandwidth cap while using DDR4-3200 CL14 kits, or at least scales with faster kits on ADL-S in this title.
We did a real quick test with DDR4-3600 CL14 with 720p in The Witcher 3 that you will see later.
Another massive advantage comes in FFXV with a 29.16% advantage for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
In a lesser degree (but no smaller feat) team Red has an 10.36% advantage in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
It seems that in 1080p, most games will see ties comparing Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs 12900K-DDR4 and some games giving a substantial win for the new 3D V-CACHE technology. 12900K-DDR5 results are to be seen, but we do expect better performance (compared to ADL-S DDR4) based on prior results we had.
UPDATE – Alder Lake-S 12900K DDR5-6000C40
My assumption was correct now with graphs updated. In titles where 3D V-Cache takes a massive win over 12900K/KF DDR4-3200C14, has lesser advantage compared to DDR5-6000C40. The Intel Core i9-12900K Needs high speed DDR5 kits (which are more expensive) to stay competitive in gaming in CACHE “sensitive” titles.
Gaming Benchmarks – 720p – AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
Summary – Gaming benchmarks – 720p
To sum it up, in our test suite, three games are tied up using DDR4-3200 CL14 kits on both systems. Assassin's Creed Origins has a small victory by 5.4%. Death Stranding difference is small, but as seen in 1080p and even with the game's 240 FPS cap, AVG FPS and 1% LOW are a little higher.
The same “phenoma” that we wrote about The Witcher 3 in 1080p, does occur in FFXV (both 1080p and 720p). Results for the Core i9-12900KF DDR4-3200 CL14 does not improve by lowering resolution in our custom scene, while it does for the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
What we presume is bandwidth cap and is very punishing for the 12900K DDR4-3200 CL14 in some titles and AMD's solution (AMD 3D V-CACHE) pulls ahead in some titles.
Some other games see a small increase with AMD 3D V-CACHE, such as F1 2020.
Intel has to small win by 5% in Strange Brigade (DX12 – Async On) which I believe it is Alder Lake-S IPC (which is way better as seen in productivity benchmarks).
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D you also have a victory by 12.32% in Shadow of War at 720p.
UPDATE – Alder Lake-S 12900K DDR5-6000C40
Again, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D actually makes a fight without any issues with 3200C14 kits in many titles. Some of them are GPU CAPPED (Control, Death Stranding). 12900K/KF has a several handicap in some titles that have a larger cache benefit (compared to DDR4 results). We will see how the 5800X3D scales with higher and lower frequency in another piece.
Bonus: The Witcher 3 – Intel Core i9-12900K DDR4-3600 CL14 data
To check if there was any scalability with this title in particular, we installed 4 DIMMs of DDR4-3600 CL14 kits in our system. There was definitely an improvement over 3200C14 so next step is benchmark 12900K DDR5-6000 C40.
Conclusion – What does this mean for the end user?
AMD did not lie about having a big benefit by using more L3 CACHE on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, giving them an edge in some titles. Some might conclude that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is morefuture proof” eleven better graphics cards become available.
This might be true in the future and it needs to be tested once new generation of GPUs are launched to the market.
The piece of tech that is impressive and hopefully will be used for Zen 4, is the stacked cache technology that AMD aimed for this processor. That being said, since AMD compared this CPU versus the Intel Core i9-12900K (although only in gaming) the Intel chip is much a better all-rounder for all kinds of loads, including gaming (with a higher price tag).
With the launch of Alder lake-s, Intel won the IPC battle and AMD will be needing Zen 4 to match or beat ADL-S, but by that time, Intel will have 13th generation around.
1080p tests show that people who already bought an Intel Core i9-12900K should not feel “buyer's regret”. It is a great CPU, has more cores and threads yet higher consumption and heat output (currently in Amazon at 580 USD, KF Version). It has more features since it uses a newer platform, such as PCIe Gen 5 and DDR5 support, compared to the now veteran, AM4 platform.
The aging of AM4 platform might be a factor that won't convince the final user, since this is the end of the line for it. It has been to good run (with its several bumps along the way) and we consider the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D as the end gift (and also experimentation) for the AMD gaming community.
For someone already using the AM4 platform, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the “ultimate gaming CPU”. According to AMD, it will retail for 449 USD, while the 5600X is currently available for 218 USD, the 5800X at 340 USD and the 5900X at 395 USD. While Zen 3 is not up to par with ADL-S and Zen 3 with 3D V-CACHE, the suggested launch price might not convince everyone and rather choose a 5600X at a way lower price point, coming from a Zen 2 CPU for example.
AMD might have to reconsider a price shift to attract new buyers, since AM4 won't receive any more CPU updates and AM5 is around the corner (supposed to launch later this year). AM5 will require a new motherboard if the generational improvement is substantial, so this is something to consider before making a big commitment now or wait what AMD and Intel have to show us in the near future.
We have now tested with DDR5-6000C40 kits and it takes high speed DDR5 to fight back AMD's new offering, having an overall costly platform for gaming.
DDR5 still has a high premium (especially high-speed low latency kits) and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is on par with the Intel Core i9-12900K/KF with DDR5-6000C40, showing again larger cache does benefit a lot in many titles.
The 3D V-CACHE initiative (and experimentation) applied for gaming is an interesting one and definitely has its merits and makes you wonder, if Intel might offer some kind of stacking technology in the future for their DIY CPU market.
Unless our tests are wrong, DDR4 seems to severely cap ADL-S performance in some titles (we tried to disable E-Cores, activate HAGS, deactivate all types of VT-D) and asked some friends to do the same test in Windows 11 with our same save game and presets, having same results from the screenshots they sent to us internally.
With the test system we have, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D offers no IPC gains in productivity for most applications since frequency has been lowered (which makes totally sense). Anyway, AMD never made such statements implying productivity loads, just gaming.
Since we do not have direct communication with AMD, we cannot give a more technical in-depth why AMD has capped overclocking in these chips, except for what AMD's robert hallock said to HotHardware, 3D V-Cache being limited up to 1.3 to 1.35 volts (lowering boost clocks).
As we stated, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the final gift for AM4 from AMD and it is the end of the line, which will be welcomed by many AMD users already on the platform.
Would it be too much to ask a Ryzen 5 5600X3D in the future? Please never make a decision from speculation, but I leave it as a thought.
Review - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 449 USD
Summary
AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D Introduces 3D V-Cache which benefits gaming, matching the most expensive Core i9-12900K/KF while using more expensive DDR5 kits, compared to a lower cost DDR4-3200C14 used in our test. launch price and no OC capabilities might be a downer for many and AMD's own offerings (which are at a discount) and Intel's Core i5-12400F might lure budget restricted users in a worldwide economic slowdown. Exisiting AM4 users in older generation, might see attractive the new chip, especially at a discount over launch price. This is the end of the line for AM4 platform, while Intel offers a younger platform which it should receive support for one more generation.
Pros
-Makes a strong fight in gaming against the Intel Core i9-12900K/KF while using DDR4-3200C14 kits against DDR5-6000C40.
-Nice upgrade for already existing AM4 users from older generations.
-Total cost of system is cheaper compared to an Intel high-end gaming PC.
Cons
-Launch price high compared to AMD's own offerings which are right now at a discount.
-AM4 platform is at the end of the line. AM5 will take the post in the future, meaning no upgrades after Zen 3 with 3D V-CACHE.
-Every type of CPU OC is blocked.

There's not really a point in benchmarking above 1080p for a CPU as 1440p and above is more GPU bound rather than CPU. Lower resolutions mean that we're testing the CPU more rather than the GPU
