Linus Torvalds: “Artificial intelligence is 90% marketing and 10% reality”
Linus Torvalds, The creator of Linux, known for his direct and forceful opinions, was no exception this time. In an interview with the American media TFiR, specialized in various sectors, including Artificial Intelligence, Torvalds was adamant in expressing his skepticism about the current state of the technology. The conversation took place during the Open Source Summit, held last month in Europe.
in his words, artificial intelligence today is:
"90% marketing and 10% reality. "
Although does not dismiss the potential and future uses of AI, Torvalds believes that the topic is currently oversized by marketing. A clear example was the last Computex in Taiwan, where many media outlets expressed their exhaustion at hearing about AI constantly, reaching levels that bordered on the comical.
In other statements, the founder of Linux said:
“I think AI is very interesting and it's going to change the world. And at the same time, I hate the cycle of hyping I don't want to go into it…”
He added:
“So my current stance on AI is pretty much to ignore it. I think the tech industry around AI is in a deplorable position (grimaces)… Although there seems to be an excess of smoke and mirrors about AI that I can hardly stand. Today, it’s 90% marketing and 10% reality.”
As previously noted, despite its current criticism, Torvalds anticipates that:
"In five years, things will change, and at that time we will see AI being used in real work tasks.. "
In conclusion, Torvalds was clear:
"Really hate This cycle of the hyping. "
