AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is overclocked to 6.6 GHz with liquid nitrogen
In a preview of AMD's upcoming R9 9950X CPU, AMD's XOC (Extreme Overclocking) team has been breaking one world record after another. This information comes thanks to Gamers Nexus' video, which offers a detailed look at their process, techniques, and the tools they use to push the new CPU to its limits. The R9 9950X, a 16-core processor, was overclocked to 6.6GHz. However, this process comes with significant challenges and energy consumption issues.
Setting New Records
The team managed to run the R9 9950X at up to 6.6GHz, although not without encountering a cold boot bug. They normalized the results to a 7950GHz 6.7X to ensure comparability, achieving significant performance improvements even at lower clock speeds. The R9 9950X, when clocked at 5.85GHz, produced similar results to the 7950X at 6.7GHz, highlighting the efficiency gains in the new architecture. Currently, the world record for the 32 Meg benchmark is 1.61 seconds, with the potential for the new CPU to surpass it.

Overclocking and Undervolting Tools
The video also talked about AMD's new overclocking and undervolting tools, particularly the "Curve Shaper" utility. This builds on the Curve Optimizer introduced in Zen 4, allowing for more precise voltage adjustments across different frequency bands. The Curve Shaper divides the voltage-frequency-temperature (VFT) space into bands, allowing targeted voltage margins for specific workloads and operating conditions. This control helps achieve greater performance and efficiency by optimizing voltage delivery based on workload and temperature.
Future perspectives
The AMD team discussed the importance of these overclocking achievements and their implications for mainstream users. They emphasize that features developed for extreme overclocking are often carried over to consumer products, improving everyday performance and efficiency. The upcoming release of the R9 9950X promises to bring significant advances that will be analyzed as the reviews come out.
